Packing for College: Sensory Strategies for Success

Jeanne Eichler, Ed.D., MOT, OTR/L, MT

HEADING TO COLLEGE? DON’T FORGET TO PACK THE IMPORTANT STUFF! (and figuring out what the important stuff actually is….)

It’s that time of year, and students are thinking ahead to the fall semester. Some are getting ready to head off to college. Room assignments have been made. Shopping is underway. Boxes and bins are collecting items from recommended packing lists all around the house- preparing for the big move-in day… What if I told you that there are important items that NEVER make that list? And some items deemed to be necessities are never used?

This interactive workshop is full of stories, examples, and even a bit of science- lessons learned while practicing as an occupational therapist serving struggling students in multiple campus settings- students who often did just fine in high school. Students who were not diagnosed with anything and students who had experience managing a diagnosis like Autism or ADHD. The only pre-requisite is that you have a neurological system. (hint- you do!)

Reflective activities will even help people heading into work or other environments. We actually pack ourselves every time we leave the house. There are ways to intentionally set ourselves up for a good experience.

We will talk about where campus packing lists come from and how the contents of the lists are determined, identify hidden and intentional sensory strategies you may already use for academic and social success, and even brainstorm ways to set up and adapt your spaces for better comfort and performance.
