Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum: Tips for Tackling the “Firsts”

In this keynote session for the US Autism Association’s Summit: Coming of Age Across the Autism Spectrum, Carol Weinman and Dr. Stephen Shore identify a number of “firsts” that individuals encounter as they transition away from home and move into employment or higher education for the first time. With topics ranging from relationships and sexuality to disclosure, advocacy, and even into some of the “softer” skills of living independently, this session is one that shouldn’t be missed for anyone planning or supporting these transitions for autistic individuals.

Stephen Shore, Ed.D.

Diagnosed with "Atypical Development and strong autistic tendencies" and "too sick" for outpatient treatment, Dr. Shore was recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four, and with much support from his parents, teachers, wife, and others, Stephen is now a professor at Adelphi University where his research focuses on matching best practice to the needs of people with autism.
