Ethan Miller
Ethan Miller grew up in a family with parents dedicated to serving those children with severe to mild autism or other cognitive disabilities. His father Arnold Miller was a PhD psychologist and his mother, Eileen Eller-Miller, was a speech pathologist. The family business was not only working with the children, but developing concepts and theories for understanding the inner workings of these children. Ethan's father and mother were pioneers in the field and developed The Language and Cognitive Development Center school and clinic, which Ethan Miller is director of today. They also developed the theory known as The Miller Method which included the programs: Symbol Accentuation, The Umwelt Assessment, Sign and Spoken Language Program, Elevated Square and board room techniques, and Systems learning and others concepts.
All three of the Miller brothers contributed, with Loren being the graphic design, editing and computer specialist, David the legal and business expert, and Ethan being the company jack of all trades. At the summer camp, Capescapes, they were put to work as video specialists and Jr. counselors. Years later, after Ethan completed degrees in Communication and Engineering, he came aboard fulltime as building manager consultant, videographer. His parents made this work their life’s work.
In 2004, Ethan's mother passed after cancer invaded her suppressed immune system due to a liver transplant, and this led to closing the school. His father continued working extensively with early use of videoconferencing which he introduced as a tool. During that time, Ethan continued to work with his father on various projects including the Miller Diagnostic Survey and other video documentation, among other things.
Ethan's father passed away in 2011 due to pancreatic cancer. He left a deep void in the intellectual activity surrounding the ways to treat children with autism. Ethan’s job has been to continue treatment of children with ASD, promoting the method whenever possible. They have provided clinics and training, discussing the method on video including Autism Brainstorm program, and trainings in several countries, including Russia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, India as well as other countries, and other states inside the US.
Ethan Miller has been fortunate to incorporate many friends and colleagues in the effort, Dr. Stephen M. Shore and Ms. Carol Hilliard among them. Additional projects include the construction of a database and digital library of over 3000 hours of assessment and treatment by the Millers over 40 years, at the LCDC Inc. and other locations. This will be available for training and research. LCDC has also been developing additional training programs for certification at the College level, and most recently, the MM Continuing Education Program for youths and adults on the ASD, who are struggling to advance towards independence and other adult goals.
