Panel: Autism and the Arts

In this session, panelists will highlight the importance of including the arts in all areas of life for those on the autism spectrum. With a special focus on what is known about brain development for those with autism, this panel will highlight the various art forms in use therapeutically in the treatment of autism and will discuss why the arts are effective in addressing the needs of those on the autism spectrum.

Stephen Shore, Ed.D.

Diagnosed with "Atypical Development and strong autistic tendencies" and "too sick" for outpatient treatment, Dr. Shore was recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four, and with much support from his parents, teachers, wife, and others, Stephen is now a professor at Adelphi University where his research focuses on matching best practice to the needs of people with autism.

Elaine Hall

Elaine Hall is an internationally recognized thought-leader on autism and inclusion and is a pioneer in the use of the arts to enhance quality of life for individuals on the spectrum, creating original content and celebrating neurodiversity.

Michael McManmon, Ed.D.

Dr. Michael McManmon founded the College Internship Program (CIP) in 1984. Prior to Founding CIP, he worked for state, private and non-profit organizations in several states and was certified as a family teacher through the Boys Town Center in Nebraska.

Yasmine White, MT-BC, is the CEO and Founder of Voices Together. She developed an innovative music therapy model that is a non-directive intervention for individuals who are neurodivergent and who have I/DD.
